November 2008 - World Day

On November 19, 2008, The Gatehouse, as part of a world-wide acknowledgement, will hold an Open House, to recognize World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

More details to follow.

BACKGROUND: together for a culture of prevention

About the Day....
World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse was launched on 19 November 2000 and takes place every year to create a synergy with the World Day for the Rights of the Child celebrated on 20 November. (Convention article 34: "the State shall protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse, including prostitution and involvement in pornography").

Why this World Day ....
Child abuse is in the headlines with alarming regularity. Children can prevent abuse and abduction if they are given skills they can understand and practice in every day life. Governments and civil society organisations need to play a more active role in promoting children's rights and protecting them from abuse.

Purpose...
Empower the global coalition of relevant organizations and community groups in creating a culture or prevention of child abuse; disseminate public educational briefings and prevention programs, and promote Internet guidelines for the safe use of the net.

Who convenes the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse ....
The Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF), an international, non-profit humanitarian NGO, working for women's and children's rights, the World Fund for the Dignity of Children in partnership with the USA Coalition for Children, are convening the Day.

Aim….
Provide children and families with skills and resources they need to prevent abuse, cope with effects, and hopefully end such practices.
